Waste management – Extended producer responsibility

The new Extended Producer Responsibility system will enter into force at the beginning of July. The government’s priority is to lead Hungary as quickly as possible to a circular economy in which as much waste as possible is reused as raw material. The country’s waste management sector is being restructured, with MOHU MOL Zrt. replacing the state in waste management as the concessionaire.

From that date, in line with EU directives and regulations, a system of extended producer responsibility will be introduced, whereby producers and distributors of products will have to pay a fee to cover the costs of managing the waste of their products according to the polluter-pays principle. This affects packaging, certain single-use and other plastic products, electrical and electronic equipment, batteries and accumulators, vehicles, tyres, office and promotional papers, cooking oils and fats, textile products and wooden furniture.

Affected businesses will pay increased fees, which will be calculated by the MEKH Energy Office as an independent pricing authority. The amount of the fee will be based quarterly on the amount of products brought into circulation. The new system with MOHU MOL Zrt. will not bring any changes for the population, which will continue to pay the official tariff for waste collection.
