The Hungarian Ministry of Defense has awarded a major order to the German Rheinmetall Group. Accordingly, Rheinmetall will supply Hungary with a wide range of ammunition worth several hundred million euros. The order encompasses ammunition for armored personnel carriers, battle tanks, artillery and decoy systems. Delivery is starting in 2023 and is to be complete by 2031.

The munitions factory being built in Várpalota, which is majority-owned by the German armaments company, plays a key role in this. As part of the cooperation, a range of 30-millimeter medium-calibre ammunition will be supplied for the Lynx infantry fighting vehicles, which will be built at Rheinmetall’s Zalaegerszeg plant from 2023.

The production facility for the Lynx infantry fighting vehicle was handed over last weekend and built by the Hungarian state and Rheinmetall at a cost of HUF 60 billion (EUR 162 million). The annual capacity is 45 vehicles. Series production in the 30,000 m2 workshop on an area of around 18 hectares is expected to start in early 2023. The Zalaegerszeg plant will employ 500 people. In addition to the production of Lynx armored personnel carriers, R&D will also be carried out there and later further combat vehicles may be built.
