MKIF Zrt – Expansion of the M1 highway

The M1 highway will be widened to 2×3 lanes over a length of 80 km between Budapest and Győr. In addition to the three lanes in both directions, a so-called intelligent hard shoulder (ITS) will be created, which can be easily opened to traffic during roadworks, traffic jams or accidents.

According to the concessionaire MKIF Zrt., the preparatory work for the route expansion will start in the coming weeks. The actual construction work is scheduled to begin by September 1, 2025 at the latest. The expansion of the M1 highway should be completed by 2029.

MKIF Zrt. plans to expand a total of around 300 km of highways (M1, M3, M7) and build 280 km of new expressways by 2034. Construction of the M200 between Komárom and Sárbogárd will begin in 2028.
