By the end of 2024, more than 70,000 fully electric vehicles were on Hungary’s roads. According to the Ministry of Energy, 1,970 new registrations were added in December alone.
This is one of the highest monthly figures. Only in March, June, and September 2024 did sales exceed 2,000 electric vehicles per month. Over the entire year, nearly 22,000 BEVs were newly registered, including more than 20,000 passenger cars. However, this growth was largely driven by substantial government subsidy programs. A total of HUF 21 billion (EUR 51.4 million) in grants supported the purchase of 5,400 electric cars, vans, and minibuses, helping companies transition their fleets.
The BYD Atto 3 has now lost its top spot as the most popular model to Tesla. More than 500 Tesla Model Y vehicles were ordered. In the brand competition, Tesla holds second place with 800 total orders, while BYD leads the market with a broader model range (Atto, Seal, Dolphin, ETP3) and well over 1,300 orders. Volvo follows in third place with over 400 electric vehicles ordered.
