Hungary’s most powerful supercomputer “Komondor” was inaugurated in its own super computing center at the University of Debrecen with an investment of HUF 4.7 billion (approx. EUR 12 million).
The supercomputer has a performance of 5 petaflops, which corresponds to the capacity of 50,000 laptops. Such an HPC infrastructure (HPC = High Performance Computing) is indispensable for scientists today as it is for the development of innovative solutions in industry. Other possible areas of application are climate research, telecommunications, transport management, energy management, health care and the automotive industry.
The modern facility employs more than 100 researchers on site and can be expanded in a modular way, for which infrastructure and buildings are designed accordingly. A connection to the city’s sports swimming pool is also planned, which in future will be heated with the waste heat from the supercomputer.
