The dual carriageway section of the 125 km-long M44 expressway between the M5 motorway and Szentkirály was inaugurated recently. The new stretch, spanning over 30 kilometers, will allow drivers to travel directly from Kecskemét to Békéscsaba.
The government has decided that all county seats in Hungary should be accessible via expressways. In recent years, Eger, Szolnok, Salgótarján, Sopron, and Kaposvár have been connected to the motorway network. With the opening of the M44, Békéscsaba now also “joins this club.”
The M1, M3, and M7 motorways are set to be expanded to three lanes in the coming years, and construction of the M8 motorway is also planned. Additionally, the M44 will be extended to the national border, and the M47 will be built between Békéscsaba and Debrecen. The government’s goal is to create a new economic zone within the Békéscsaba–Debrecen–Nagyszalonta triangle through the development of the M44 and M47 expressways.
