Housing construction – Only slight increase

Last year, 20,540 new housing units were handed over, according to the statistical data for 2022 now published.

New construction of 20,540 units was only 3.2% above the previous year’s level. In the fall, the segment still recorded an increase of 7.7%. With 6,900 handovers, the sector recorded the weakest last quarter of the year in a long time. In contrast, nearly 11,000 apartments were handed over in the fourth quarter of 2019 and as many as 15,500 in 2020.

Budapest still held the main share with just over 6,600 apartments, despite a 6% decline in new construction. In smaller cities, just over 5,000 apartments (-4%) were handed over, and in the county seats around 4,650 apartments. This represents an increase of a good tenth compared with 2021.

The share of corporate housing construction fell further to 60%, with almost half of the new apartments now being built in single-family houses again. In this context, living space also increased again significantly, by 5.5 to 96 square meters.
