Alföld Program – New economic region to create 50,000 jobs

Over the next 15 years, a new economic region is set to emerge in the Alföld (Great Plain) along the Békéscsaba–Debrecen–Nagyszalonta axis. The travel time by rail from Budapest to Brașov, located at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains, will be reduced by five hours.

A newly upgraded 30-kilometer railway section between Békéscsaba and Lőkösháza was inaugurated. The investment was implemented with EU funding amounting to HUF 186.2 billion net (EUR 480 million) under Hungary’s Recovery and Resilience Plan.

The entire M44 motorway, connecting Békés County to the national highway network, will be completed this year. Plans are underway for the M47 between Békéscsaba and Debrecen, while the M4 will be extended from Szolnok through Kisújszállás to Berettyóújfalu, from where the Romanian border is already accessible via a four-lane road.

50,000 jobs are expected to be created across the region in the near future, including major investments by Singapore’s Vulcan Shield Global in Békéscsaba, the second Mercedes plant in Kecskemét, the BYD plant in Szeged, and the BMW facility in Debrecen.
