AI Supercomputer at the University of Szeged

An artificial intelligence, AI-focused supercomputer has been inaugurated at the University of Szeged (SZTE).

The new supercomputer is optimized for AI research, such as solving medical and genomic problems or developing improved language models. The IT investment amounted to HUF 1.2 billion (EUR 3 million), and operating costs over the next five years are estimated at HUF 800 million (EUR 2 million).

With this, the university has acquired 1.75 petaflops of computing capacity. Hungary has also signed an agreement with the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC), Europe’s largest, with a capacity of 800 petaflops, which grants Hungarian experts access to the 10 petaflops of computing power needed for their research. In addition, Hungary can deploy its own high-performance computing hardware at the center and access the full capacity when needed.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has brought world-leading technology to Szeged, as the three fastest supercomputers in the world, and the fastest in Europe, use the same technology now implemented at SZTE. At the same time, HPE signed a strategic agreement with the university for educational and research cooperation, granting the institution access to the multinational IT company’s computing capacities as a cloud service.
