The Ministry of Transport has presented an action plan for the modernization of rail transport.
An important point is the continued reform of the state railroads MÁV, which in future will comprise three segments for passenger transportation, the rail network and logistics services in the form of independent subsidiaries.
Hungary intends to apply to the EIB for a credit line of EUR 1 billion in order to set up a complex development programme for the modernization of the rail network with a volume of HUF 880 billion (EUR 2.2 billion) together with its own funds from 2025. EU subsidies are to be used for the purchase of new suburban trains. In addition to the purchase of modern vehicles abroad, used fleets may also be purchased.
So as to increase travel comfort, private capital is to be involved in the renovation of stations. In exchange, investors would be able to use areas outside the operating site. One could imagine such a solution at Budapest South Station, for example. MÁV would like to modernize smaller stations using its own funds.
