A pilot research laboratory at the University of Debrecen was officially inaugurated. The laboratory received non-repayable EU funding of HUF 5.168 billion (EUR 13 million). The lab will be in trial operation until 2026.
In the future, the laboratory will produce viral and bacterial biological agents using sterile manufacturing technologies. A key element of the project was the creation of a scientific center where drug development and small-scale production can be carried out in a biosafety level II (BSL2) working environment. According to Rector Zoltán Szilvássy, the laboratory should develop a bacteriophage (bacteria-killing virus) within a year that kills all local antibiotic-resistant bacteria that cause hospital infections.
