BMW – High-voltage battery plant in Debrecen

The BMW Group is building a unit to assemble high-voltage batteries for the Neue Klasse vehicles at its location in Debrecen. The company creates more than 500 additional jobs and is investing more than EUR 2 billion in the construction and commissioning of the entire plant by the end of 2025. So far, it was a sum of around one billion euros. The government funds the investment with HUF 13.5 billion (EUR 32.8 million).

With the fully electric model Neue Klasse initially located in the middle segment, BMW wants to accelerate the spread of the electric vehicles. As the first car factory in the world, the plant in Debrecen is to produce exclusively with renewable energy and completely CO2-free.

The high-voltage battery plant is set up on the site of the vehicle production base in Debrecen. The construction of the plant started about six months ago. Around 1,000 employees in the actual car production are to produce up to 150,000 fully electric cars a year in Debrecen.

The production of the 6th generation high-voltage batteries take place in parallel to the start of vehicle production. The battery production comprises an area of more than 140,000 square meters. The next generation batteries can provide 30% longer driving range and 30% faster charging speed.
