Wages increased nominally, shrank in real terms

According to statistical data, gross average wages in January 2023 were HUF 530,000 (EUR 1,394). In nominal terms, gross wages increased by 16% year-on-year, but the purchasing power of real wages shrinking by 7.5% due to the 25.7% inflation rate in the first month of the year.

At the beginning of the year, the gross wages of full-time employees ranged between HUF 350,000 (EUR 921) in the hotel and restaurant industry and a good HUF 865,000 (EUR 2,276) in the IT sector. Excluding special payments such as bonuses, gross wages were HUF 515,000 (EUR 1,355) in the non-profit sector, HUF 505,000 (EUR 1,328) in the competitive sphere and HUF 490,000 (EUR 1,289) in the public sector. Net wages averaged about HUF 350,000 (EUR 921).
