New U.S. nuclear technologies

Hungary is advancing its energy security by beginning comprehensive preparations for the introduction of American Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology.

The goal is to implement this forward-looking technology to ensure Hungary’s long-term energy needs, technologically, legally, and in terms of infrastructure.

As the government aims to guarantee the lowest possible energy tariffs for households, Hungary must increasingly cover its energy demand independently of imports.

SMR technology trials are now entering the implementation phase. In addition to traditional large-scale power plants, small modular nuclear reactors are gaining importance. These SMRs are ideal for providing reliable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly energy to industrial areas and new industrial developments.

Global market leaders include American companies such as GE Vernova, whose technologies are licensed for Central Europe by the Polish company Synthos Green Energy. The Hungarian state-owned company Hunatom Zrt. has now signed a cooperation agreement with Synthos to prepare a similar project and bring U.S. technologies to Hungary.
