Liberty Steel has been selected as the winning bidder in the tender for the Dunaferr. Liberty Steel Central Europe Kft. buys Dunaferr for EUR 55 million (just under HUF 21 billion). The steelworks company has been in financial difficulties for a long time. Originally, five companies were in the running for the purchase. In the end, Liberty Steel and Vulcan Steel remained in the competition.
Dunaferr went into liquidation on 14 December 2022, and the proceedings created the necessary legal framework for the survival of the plant. Due to the irresponsibility of the foreign management, failed sanctions and the energy crisis, Dunaferr became insolvent at the end of 2022. A few months ago, the government had to intervene when it granted temporary aid of HUF 16 billion (EUR 42.7 million) for wage payments of the more than 4,000 employees.
