Ministry of Energy – Test drilling for pumped storage power plants

Test drillings for the construction of pumped storage power plants are beginning near Sajóivánka (Borsod County) and Markaz (Heves County). Sajóivánka is part of the Miskolc-Kazincbarcika heavy industry belt. Markaz is located directly above the Mátra power plant and already has a reservoir.

The first domestic pumped storage power plant will have an installed capacity of 600 MW and will be able to generate energy continuously for six hours. Part of the water surface of the reservoirs will also be covered with floating solar panels to reduce the evaporation of the water, according to the Ministry of Energy. The project is expected to provide energy storage capacity in 5-10 years at the latest.
