Tesco invests in store modernisation

Tesco-Global Áruházak Zrt. modernised 12 hypermarkets and 13 smaller express stores in February last year. In addition, the size of the stores was optimised and new self-service checkouts were installed at several locations. The modernisation of 30 hypermarkets and 10 additional shops is planned for this financial year.

The retail chain has 11,000 employees and operates 197 shops in Hungary. Tesco spent about HUF 5.5 billion ( EUR 14.7 million) on modernisations in the March 2020-March 2021 financial year, up from HUF 4.1 billion (EUR 10.9 million) in the previous year. During the period, the company had a turnover of almost HUF 624 billion (EUR 1.6 billion), compared to HUF 590 billion (EUR 1.5 billion) the year before. Profit after tax was almost HUF 13 billion (EUR 34.7 million), compared to a loss of HUF 1.2 billion (EUR 3.2 million) in the previous period.

Tesco was the third largest retail chain in Hungary by gross sales in 2021, after Lidl and Spar.
