The first well of a newly discovered natural gas deposit was put into operation near Sarkad in Békés County in the southeast of the country, not far from the border with Romania. At the same time, drilling of the second well will be started.
With intensified domestic gas production, Hungary is strengthening its energy sovereignty and security of supply. The so-called Corvinus project, with the participation of the state-owned MVM Group, was declared a strategic investment last summer.
Although gas cosumption fell by 17% last year as a result of the energy crisis, Hungary’s dependence on imports remains enormous. For this reason, domestic production is to be increased from 1.5 to 2 billion cubic meters annually. In addition, geothermal energy is to replace natural gas in the district heating supply in more and more cities.
