BMW plant Debrecen – Completely without fossil fuels

The plant being built in Debrecen will completely abandon fossil fuels. BMW wants to operate the plant exclusively with renewable energy sources, CEO Oliver Zipse told at the BMW Annual General Meeting in Munich.

Debrecen will be the first car plant in the world to be operated without fossil fuels. The foundation stone for the plant will be laid on June 1. The plant is being built with an investment of EUR 1 billion on an area of 400 hectares and will create over 1,000 new jobs. The first pre-series cars of the all-electric New Class will roll off the production line here 26 months later.

Electricity for manufacturing will be generated on site for the most part, while 100 percent renewable energy sources will provide the rest. The decision not to use gas at the Debrecen plant goes back to the goal of reducing CO2 emissions in production and is independent of the current supply situation. The concept ensures price stability and security of supply.
