The Hungarian state takes over 51% of the shares in the operating company of Debrecen International Airport. The airport property and the facilities there remain the property of the city. The 51% stake in the airport operator company will be transferred to the state free of charge.

If the infrastructural developments are implemented, Debrecen could handle around 2-3 million passengers a year by 2030. Debrecen already plays an important role in the country’s economic and cultural life. It is not only the centre of Eastern Hungary, but of the entire region. Several companies are already investing billions in Debrecen. Not only Debrecen, but also Nyíregyháza, Miskolc and other towns and communities in the region benefit from Debrecen International Airport. The region with around 3 million inhabitants includes northern and eastern Hungary and the neighboring areas beyond the border.

Nevertheless, the airport must assert itself and develop further, since Kosice and Oradea also have international airports.
In February 2020, the government approved the development strategy for Debrecen up to 2030, which also includes the development of the airfield.
